Many household appliances have their own programmers that allow you to start a given device at a specific time. This is a very practical solution, especially for people who use dual-rate electricity. In this way, they can use cheaper electricity even when they are not at home. A timer allows for similar control of other devices in your home. Thanks to it, you will have everything perfectly planned and always on time.

What is a timer?
Rail-mounted timers
electrical devices are plugged into a controlled electrical circuit. Other models can be plugged into a socket - they act as an adapter, because they also have a place for the device plug. Such a connection allows you to control the power supply to the receiver according to a previously programmed schedule. In this way, even in your absence, devices can start at a specified time. Others, on the other hand, will turn off according to a set program.
What are the uses of programmable time controllers?
- Running receivers in a cheaper current zone - for example, water heating or air conditioning on very hot days.
- Control of devices that should operate with temporary breaks.
- Turning on the lights in your home while you’re on vacation to simulate the presence of household members.
- Turning off devices after a specified period of time after being turned on.
- Control of production processes in which individual machines should be started at specific times.
In addition to selecting the appropriate time controller model, it is also important to program it correctly.
How to choose a timer?
The basic division of time controllers distinguished digital and mechanical models. The latter usually indicated a 24-hour operating cycle, and each subsequent 15 minutes was marked with another switch. It was enough to turn on the buttons corresponding to the hours when the device was to be turned on. However, this solution was not very practical and was quickly replaced by digital models. They allow for setting a weekly program by entering the hours of power on and off.
There are also models with a different program range. The Zamel ZCM-22 time programmer has a program with a yearly range, with the option of setting each week. Each controller has its own clock (also with a calendar), which is powered by an additional battery. In this way, a power outage will not cause the program to be lost or the internal clock to be reset.
How to set the timer?
The LCD display shows
current time of the internal clock. However, using the buttons below allows you to enter the program entry mode. For each period (usually days of the week), the times of device start and power cut are entered.
Experts point to the possibility of copying a program from one day and pasting it into the others. This is a great convenience. Another function that is often forgotten, but which every timer has, is the possibility of manual control.
With one button you can enter four controller states one after another:
- Manual with power on. In this mode the device will work all the time.
- Automatic with power on. Regardless of the program, the device will remain on until the next change saved in the schedule. Then the controller will start working according to the entered program.
- Manual with power off. Timer disconnects power.
- Automatic with power off. The device will remain off until the next program change.
To better explain the operation of mode two (and similarly mode four), let's assume that the set program starts the device every day at 10:00, and turns it off at 14:00. Therefore, at 8:00 the power supply will be disconnected. When entering mode two, the programmer will remain on until 10:00. Then it will switch to control according to the schedule - i.e. the device will continue to operate until 14:00, when it will be turned off. It will automatically start again the next day at 10:00.
Time programmers available at the Onninen wholesaler
The Onninen electrical wholesaler sells many models of time controllers. The most popular models with standard operation, such as the Zamel 1-KAN weekly timer , are characterized by very low failure rate and long service life.
The offer also includes more advanced controllers, such as the Zamel ZCM-31 astronomical time programmer , which adjusts to current weather conditions or time of day (day - evening - night). This opens up even more interesting possibilities for controlling lighting or devices in single-family buildings.
