An Internet cable is one of the most important elements of home or office IT infrastructure. Although many people do not pay attention to the Ethernet cable, it is crucial if we want a fast and stable connection. What is a network cable and why is it so important?

What is a network cable?

A network cable , marked according to the technical nomenclature as an RJ45 cable, is used to connect the Internet or a local network in devices such as a computer, console, TV, router and many others whose functionality allows for connecting to the network.

Over the years, technology has developed and today each of us has many types of network cables to choose from, which differ not only in terms of technical specifications, but also the type of network to which our device will be connected. Regardless of these differences, each network cable has one primary task - to send information between devices.

It would seem that when looking for fast and stable Internet, we should first of all pay attention to the service provider's offer. However, while offering us very fast Internet, it will not guarantee us using its full potential if our Ethernet cable does not meet specific requirements .

Types of internet cables

As previously mentioned, Ethernet cables are different from each other, and the most important difference comes from the types of terminals available. We can mention:

  • Type A tip - in this variant, the pins are arranged in the following color order: white-green, green, white-orange, blue, white-blue, orange, white-brown, brown
  • Type B tip - in this variant, the pins are arranged in the following color order: white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown, brown.

Various network cables are available on the market - both with two ends of the same type and with two different ends. The two variants have slightly different uses. If we want to connect two computers, use a cable with two different ends. Most often, however, we will use the basic variant, which is a straight cable, which allows, thanks to the same terminals, to connect a computer or other device to the router.

However, this is not the only distinction between Ethernet cable variants. As previously mentioned, choosing the right cable will ensure that we use the full potential of the Internet service. Therefore, network cables can be divided into several categories that indicate the length of the connection and the bandwidth of the link. Network cables are divided into the following categories:

  • 5e - speed up to 1GB/s
  • 6, 6a - speed up to 10 GB/s
  • 7 - speed up to 10 GB/s + frequency up to 600 MHz
  • 8 - speed up to 40 GB/s + frequency up to 1 GHz

So if we invest in a new network cable , remember the rapid development of technology and the potential possibility of using optical fiber services, which will require the use of a high-bandwidth Ethernet cable.

Additionally, it is worth mentioning that Ethernet cables are distinguished according to their resistance to interference. We can mention three basic types of cables:

  • FTP cable - ideal cable for rooms with a low level of electromagnetic interference.
  • UTP cable - a cable created by twisting a pair of wires together.
  • S-FTP cable - a cable providing the best protection against electromagnetic interference, used in places with particular exposure to this factor.

Does internet cable matter?

Many of us, trying to increase the speed of our Internet connection, look for the source of the problem in the wrong place. We change the Internet provider's offers, look for a more efficient router, and in fact the problem may result from the type of Internet cable used.

The Ethernet cable determines the speed of data transfer even in a situation where we do not use it directly, but the router.   So if we want to achieve optimal speed and stability of the home or office Internet, let's check what type of Ethernet cable is used and replace it with a new one.   Currently, type 6 and 6a are a convenient solution that will allow us to enjoy the full capabilities of optical fiber.
