When is it worth choosing a high-temperature heat pump?

Added: Tuesday, 9/26/2023

In times of drastic increases in the prices of solid fuels and natural gas and continuous tightening of emission standards, the choice of a heating system is crucial to obtain an effective and, importantly, timeless heating installation. Investors planning to build a house or wanting to get rid of old boilers have various solutions to choose from. Interest in heat pumps is growing every year. Heat pumps are modern, efficient and environmentally friendly heating devices. The models available on the market differ, among others: supply temperature. You can choose between high-temperature and low-temperature heat pumps. Find out when a high-temperature heat pump will be the most energy-efficient solution.

What is a high temperature heat pump?

A high-temperature heat pump is a heating device equipped with technology that allows water to be heated to much higher temperatures than in the case of a traditional, low-temperature heat pump. A high-temperature heat pump is able to supply water for central heating and sanitary purposes (hot utility water) at a temperature of 55-65 o C and higher - even up to 70-80 o C, depending on the model. Even at very low outside temperatures, this system is characterized by high efficiency. In severe frost, high-temperature heat pumps allow you to achieve the best COP coefficients, because most of the thermal energy comes from the lower source.

What is the difference between a high temperature and low temperature heat pump?

The heat pump transports heat from a low-temperature ground source to the heating installation. To ensure maximum energy efficiency, it is necessary to supply water at the appropriate temperature to the heat receivers. The difference between a high-temperature and a low-temperature heat pump is the different output temperature achieved. Compared to a high-temperature pump, a low-temperature device reaches an average of 35-40°C. Therefore, it needs a larger heat exchange surface in the form of, for example, underfloor heating. It should be noted that both types of heat pumps are able to provide users with optimal thermal comfort, a sufficient amount of hot water and the lowest possible heating costs. The practical difference lies in the use/purpose of the devices.

Nibe-Biawar S2125-12 high-temperature heat pump - 8.2 kW, 3-phase, 400 V, R290 The high-temperature heat pump is recommended for investors who want to invest in a new heat source with a high energy efficiency class, without replacing the entire system. The high-temperature device can replace, for example, an obsolete gas boiler and work with the existing pipe installation and traditional fin radiators, which require water at a temperature of up to 65°C. It is also perfect for heating industrial facilities and public places.

The low-temperature heat pump, on the other hand, ensures effective power supply for low-temperature installations. It is intended for buildings with surface heating, such as underfloor, ceiling or wall heating. For full efficiency and profitability, a low-temperature system requires very good thermal insulation, and effective house insulation is not the domain of old buildings.

How much does it cost to install a high-temperature heat pump?

Various factors influence the price of a high-temperature heat pump and its installation. A high-temperature monoblock air heat pump , i.e. mounted entirely outside the building, costs approx. PLN 35,000-45,000. zloty. The compressor, heat exchanger, fan and other elements are housed in one housing. Much cheaper, but much more expensive to install and operate, is a split heat pump. It consists of an external and internal unit, between which the gaseous working medium circulates in copper pipes.

You have to pay more for a model equipped with an automatic evaporator defrosting system or remote control via a mobile application. You need to spend an additional approx. 25-40 thousand PLN on the installation of an air heat pump and the purchase and installation of other necessary and optional elements of the heating system. zloty. The total cost of purchasing and installing a high-temperature air heat pump will usually be known after an audit. Remember that you can significantly reduce the investment price by using government subsidies. For example, an air-water heat pump with a higher energy class is subsidized for over PLN 19,000. zloty. That's practically half.

What are the advantages of a high temperature heat pump?

High-temperature LG split heat pump - 16kW Most old buildings are not suitable for integration with low-temperature heating. Designed to handle high temperatures, high temperature pumps are the perfect thermal solution for decades-old buildings. They successfully replace old gas, oil and coal boilers. They are easily integrated with typical radiators that require an input temperature of approximately 50-65°C to heat rooms. The entire system is not changed, only the heating device itself. The previously used heat receivers remain in their places. You can enjoy a modern, economical, environmentally friendly heating system without the need for comprehensive thermal modernization and general renovation. The temperature in the rooms will be stable and in line with demand, and the cost of heating a single-family house with such a system in many cases does not exceed PLN 2,000. PLN per year.

High-temperature heat pumps are also distinguished by their versatility. They are used not only in residential buildings, but also in industrial plants and warehouse facilities where high levels of heat are required. Moreover, they are suitable for both heating and cooling rooms, acting as both a heating and air conditioning system.

A high-temperature air heat pump can cooperate with an additional heat source, e.g. a class biomass boiler, creating a hybrid heating system.

Radiators combined with a high-temperature heat pump

The high-temperature heat pump is combined with older, traditional radiators (e.g. cast iron), which require a much higher supply temperature to ensure optimal thermal efficiency compared to underfloor heating. In the case of modern low-temperature radiators, an economical low-temperature heat pump will be a more advantageous solution.
