What types of sandpaper are there?
Sandpaper belongs to the so-called abrasive products group. It is used to process various materials. You need to pay attention to the layer of abrasive grain glued to the substrate, the so-called fill. Sandpaper is made of elements such as:
- base layer
- binder layer
- abrasive layer.
We distinguish between coarse and fine-grained sandpaper. It is important to know that according to the European standard ISO 6344, in the case of gradation above 240, it is necessary to conduct an analysis using the sedimentation method. Considering the grit, you need to know that sandpaper for wood is the one with grit from P24 to P400. For painted surfaces, paper with grit from P40 to P1200 is used. For mineral surfaces and concrete, we can recommend paper with grit P20-P24. For plastics and high gloss, it is best to use abrasive with grit P600-P1200, while for metal P80-P1500 will be suitable.
How to choose the right grit of sandpaper?
The grit of sandpaper should be selected for the material. For example, sandpaper with a very low grit - such as at the P12-P100 level is used for processing various materials, most often to remove the top layer. It can be used to sand down layers of rust from metal, but also to shape elements made of wood. Its characteristic feature is large grains.
We also distinguish sandpaper with low grit, i.e. those of P100-P180. It is best used to remove dirt from various materials. It can be used to smooth surfaces or sand unvarnished wood. In this way, it is prepared for further processing. Sandpaper with medium grit is the one marked P200-P800. It is used for paint corrections, but also for matting the surface or smoothing it.
There is also high-grit sandpaper available, namely P1000 - P2500. It is best used for cosmetic corrections or small touch-ups. It can also be used to achieve high gloss.
Which sandpaper is best for smoothing walls?
You could say that walls are the calling card of a house. To refresh them, it is often not enough to just paint them. In many cases, it is also necessary to level the surface. To smooth the walls, it is best to use sandpaper made of noble electrocorundum, which has a coarse-grained structure. When it comes to smoothing, it is best to choose sandpaper with a weight of P120-P160 for preliminary sanding, while if you want to achieve a perfect effect, it is best to use sandpaper with a gradation of P200-P220 for final sanding. It is worth knowing that smoothing can be sanded both manually and by machine.
