What types of sandpaper are there?
Sandpaper belongs to the so-called groups of abrasive products. It is used for processing various materials. You need to pay attention to the layer of abrasive grain glued to the substrate, i.e. the so-called embankment. Sandpaper is made of elements such as:
- base layer
- binder layer
- abrasive layer.
We distinguish coarse-grained and fine-grained sandpaper. You should know that in accordance with the European standard ISO 6344, in the case of gradation above 240, it is necessary to conduct analysis using the sedimentation method. Taking into account the grit, you must know that sandpaper for wood is the one with a grit from P24 to P400. For varnished surfaces, paper with a grain size of P40 to P1200 is used. For mineral surfaces and concrete, we can recommend paper with a grain size of P20-P24. For plastics and high gloss, it is best to use abrasive with a grain size of P600-P1200, while for metal, P80-P1500 is suitable.
How to choose the right grit of sandpaper?
The gradation of sandpaper should be selected according to the material. For example, abrasive papers with very low gradation - P12-P100 - are used for processing various materials, most often for removing the surface layer. It can be used to sand off layers of rust from metal, but also to shape elements made of wood. Its characteristic feature is large grains.
There is also low-grid sandpaper, i.e. P100-P180. It is best to use it to remove dirt from various materials. It can be used to smooth surfaces or sand unvarnished wood. In this way, it is prepared for further processing. Medium grit sandpaper is marked P200-P800. It is used for paint corrections, but also for matting or smoothing the surface.
High-grid sandpaper, i.e. P1000 - P2500, is also available. It is best to use it for cosmetic corrections or small retouching. It can also be used to achieve high gloss.
Which sandpaper is best for smoothing walls?
You could say that walls are the showcase of a home. To refresh them, it is often not enough to just paint them. In many cases, it is also necessary to level the surface. To smooth the walls, it is best to use noble electrocorundum sandpaper, which has a coarse-grained structure. When it comes to finishes, it is best to choose sandpaper with a gradation of P120-P160 for initial sanding, and if you want to achieve the perfect effect, it is best to use sandpaper with a gradation of P200-P220 for final sanding. It is worth knowing that plaster can be sanded both by hand and by machine.
