Automotive Digital Multimeter BM319s 102123
Specialized Tool for Engine and System Diagnostics
This instrument is not a standard multimeter but a device designed specifically for the unique needs of automotive workshops. Its key advantage is the ability to perform fuel injection tests (ms-FUEL INJECTION DETECTOR function), which typically require more expensive, dedicated scanners. This allows checking the operation of TBI and PFI injectors directly in the circuit, saving time during engine diagnosis. The device responds quickly to changes thanks to fast LCD sampling (5 times per second) and a dynamic bargraph (40 times per second), enabling real-time tracking of fast pulses.
Features Dedicated to Mechanics
Workshop applications require specific functions, which this model offers as standard. The meter allows precise measurement of the contact breaker dwell angle (DWELL) and pulse duty cycle (%Duty), which is essential when adjusting older ignition systems. For measuring engine speed (RPM), the user has two methods to choose from:
- IP-RPM: using an inductive probe attached to the high-voltage wire – a non-invasive and safe method.
- IG-RPM: connecting measurement leads directly to the ignition system.
For both methods, a cylinder count selection function (from 1 to 12) and a ±Trigger mode are available, allowing the user to select the triggering edge (rising or falling). This provides full flexibility when working with various engine designs. Additionally, the Beep-Jack™ function automatically detects incorrect lead connections to the input jacks, significantly reducing the risk of device damage by the user – an important safeguard in workshop environments where haste is often a cause of errors.
Safety and Basic Electrical Measurements
Despite its specialized functions, the device retains the full capabilities of a classic auto-ranging digital multimeter. The 6000-count LCD display with backlight ensures readability even in poorly lit engine compartments. In terms of basic electrical quantities, the instrument handles AC and DC voltage up to 1000 V and current up to 20 A, allowing safe work in high-potential installations. It also supports resistance measurements up to 60 MΩ, capacitance up to 2000 µF, and AC frequency up to 50 kHz. For thermometric purposes, a temperature range from -50°C to 1000°C is available when connected with an appropriate thermocouple probe.
Work safety is a priority, confirmed by a high level of overvoltage and overload protection compliant with standards: CAT II 1000V, CAT III 600V, and CAT IV 300V. Thanks to this, the instrument is suitable not only for measurements in automotive installations but also in more demanding industrial environments or low-voltage switchboards. Additional features such as continuity testing with an audible signal and diode testing facilitate quick location of shorts and faults in vehicle wiring.
Practical Use in the Workshop
The device is compact (dimensions approx. 80 x 50 x 161 mm) and lightweight (approx. 252 g with batteries), making it easy to carry around the workshop and hold during "one-handed" measurements. The HOLD function allows freezing the result on the screen, which is useful when recording data or working in hard-to-reach places. All these features make this multimeter a complete solution for mechanics seeking a single tool for electrical and mechanical diagnostics of the vehicle's drivetrain. Power is provided by two AAA (LR-3) batteries, and the high-resolution display guarantees reading precision even when measuring voltages up to 1 kV or currents in the range of 20 A.
