GREENSAND PLUS filter media, packaging 14.2L/20KG 240013067

Effective reduction of iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide in water installations

Greensand Plus filter media is a proven catalytic technology that effectively eliminates dissolved metals and unpleasant odors from water. Unlike traditional materials, this product is based on a silica substrate coated with a layer of manganese dioxide, giving it a dual function: it acts as both a chemical oxidant and a mechanical filter. This ensures a more efficient purification process, and the media is ready for operation without the need for a long startup period or pre-activation. It is an ideal solution for water treatment systems in single-family homes as well as in industrial installations, where the stability of process water parameters is crucial.

Mechanism of action and application

Greensand Plus works by catalyzing the oxidation of iron and manganese without the need for additional reagents during the filtration phase. As water flows through the media bed, contaminant particles precipitate on the surface of the grains and are trapped. A key advantage of this material is its resistance to pressure and temperature fluctuations – it can operate at temperatures up to 38°C and at higher pressure differentials than standard equivalents. This translates to longer operating cycles between regenerations and lower consumption of water and operational energy.

The product performs particularly well under the following conditions:

  • Iron removal: effectively reduces content to below standard levels at concentrations up to 15 mg/l (pH range 6.2–8.8).
  • Manganese reduction: effective operation at concentrations up to 15 mg/l (pH range 8.0–9.0).
  • Hydrogen sulfide elimination: removes the "rotten egg" odor at concentrations up to 5 mg/l.
  • Installation protection: prevents the buildup of rust and scale in pipes and heat exchangers.

It is worth noting that this media can also be used to remove arsenic and radium, making it a versatile component of a drinking water treatment system.

Maintenance and operational parameters

To maintain the catalytic properties of the media throughout its service life (estimated at approximately 10 years), regular regeneration using a potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) solution is essential. This process renews the active layer on the surface of the grains. The recommended regeneration dose is typically between 2 to 4 g of KMnO₄ per liter of media (or approx. 113 g for a standard volume of 28.3 l). Before starting the filter after replacement or a long break, conditioning for approximately 4 hours is recommended.

When designing or servicing an installation, the specific operating data of this material must be taken into account: a package with a volume of 14.2 liters (weight 20 kg) requires a minimum bed height of 76 cm for a single bed. The continuous filtration rate should be within the range of 7.5 – 12.5 m³/h, while during backwashing, a flow rate of approximately 25 – 30 m³/h must be achieved. This allows for an appropriate bed expansion of 35 – 50% of its height with a minimum backwash time of 10 minutes. The grain size is approximately 0.3 – 0.35 mm, and the maximum operating temperature is 38°C.

For installers, it is important to maintain adequate freeboard above the bed (min. 50% of the height) and to control the degree of bed expansion during backwashing – overly aggressive backwashing can lead to loss of filter media (approx. 2% annually), while backwashing that is too weak will not effectively remove deposits. The media is supplied in a dry and non-regenerated form; after installation, it requires thorough rinsing of any remaining regeneration agent before allowing utility water into the main circulation. Due to its design, Greensand Plus tolerates the presence of chlorine in the water without losing filtration efficiency.

The Greensand iron remover is a proven technology used to remove iron, manganese, arsenic and hydrogen sulphide.
