Protection of main building distribution boards against effects of lightning strikes
ESPAC VG T12 25/260 series surge arresters are dedicated for use as Type 1 or Type 2 protection in main electrical distribution boards of residential, office and industrial buildings. They protect the installation against overvoltages generated by direct and indirect lightning strikes as well as switching overvoltages originating from the power grid.
The device performs well in facilities equipped with external lightning protection systems of LPS classes I, II, III and IV - from single-family houses to public utility facilities and industrial buildings. It can be installed at the LPZ 0/LPZ 1 boundary or in the main building distribution board.
The series is compatible with TN-S, TN-C and TN-C-S network systems (including TN-C-S), covering the majority of installations found in Polish buildings.
Construction and design solutions
The arrester uses a combined operating element consisting of a varistor and a gas-filled spark gap. This combination ensures a fast response to overvoltages (response time 100 ns) while simultaneously providing the ability to dissipate high surge energies.
The housing occupies 2 modules on a TH-35 mm rail (width 36 mm), allowing for compact installation in standard distribution boards. The device can be installed in two positions on the rail - standard or inverted - facilitating adaptation to conditions in a specific distribution board.
Connection terminals accept single-core and multi-core conductors with cross-sections up to 50 mm² as well as stranded wires with cross-sections up to 30 mm². Power supply terminals can accept voltage via both regular conductors and busbars - fork-type or pin-type.
The optical indicator provides information on the current device status without the need for disassembly: green color indicates proper operation, while red color signals wear of the replaceable module and the need for its replacement. Modules are replaceable - service consists of replacing the worn element, not the entire arrester.
An important design feature is the absence of leakage current and follow current in normal operation, eliminating unnecessary energy losses and installation load.
Operating parameters and operating conditions
The surge current of 25 kA (impulse 10/350 µs) classifies the device as a high-performance solution - capable of absorbing energy generated by direct lightning strikes on the lightning rod or structural elements of the building.
The voltage protection level Up at nominal discharge current In is 1.5 kV, which effectively limits the voltage reaching protected electrical devices below their damage threshold.
The device operates in temperatures from -40°C to +85°C, tolerating relative ambient humidity in the range of 5-95%. The enclosure protection rating is IP20, meaning indoor installation only - the product is not intended for exposure to direct weather conditions.
Maximum overcurrent protection for parallel connection is 250 A gL/gG, and for series connection - 125 A gL/gG. Short-circuit withstand capacity Isccr reaches 50 kA.
Continuous operating voltage Uc is 260 V AC, and rated voltage Un is 230 V AC. Temporary overvoltage TOV for 5 seconds L-N is at the level of 335 V.
Standards compliance
ESPAC VG T12 series arresters meet the requirements of standards PN-EN 61643-11 and IEC 61643-11, which define SPD device classification and testing methodology.
