Performance and Technology in One Tool
The brushless cordless string trimmer powered by two 18 V LXT batteries delivers a combined voltage of 36 V, providing power comparable to traditional gasoline-powered trimmers with an engine displacement of approximately 30 cm³. This enables the tool to handle not only delicate grass but also tougher weeds and dense shrubs. A key design element is the brushless DC motor (BLDC), which eliminates the need for brush replacement, significantly extending the tool's service life and reducing maintenance costs. The motor is positioned directly above the cutting head, improving the tool's balance and facilitating maneuverability in hard-to-reach areas.
The ADT (Automatic Torque Drive Technology) system acts as an intelligent assistant, automatically adjusting rotational speed and torque to match the resistance of the material being cut. This means that when cutting dense grass, the tool increases power, while in loose grass, it reduces speed to conserve battery energy. Meanwhile, the AFT (Active Feedback Sensing Technology) is a critical safety feature: in the event of a sudden jam or stoppage of the cutting head, the system instantly cuts off power, protecting the operator from injury caused by tool kickback.
Ergonomics and Working Comfort
The design features an asymmetric U-grip handlebar configuration engineered to reduce operator fatigue during extended use. This layout allows for a natural hand position and better control over the cutting direction, whether working on flat ground or on slopes. An additional advantage is the 3-step electronic speed control (from 3500 to 6500 rpm), enabling optimal speed selection based on grass type and weather conditions.
The reverse rotation function is also worth noting; it allows for self-cleaning of the cutting head by removing entangled grass or line without manual intervention—simply activate the tool briefly in the reverse direction. Vibration levels do not exceed 2.5 m/s², which, with a K-factor of 1.5 m/s², ensures comfortable operation even over prolonged periods. The tool measures approximately 176 cm in length with a cutting width of up to 35 cm (depending on the setting), making it ideal for maintaining large green areas as well as difficult spots around fences and trees.
Complete Kit and Operational Parameters
The kit includes two 5.0 Ah Li-Ion batteries and a dual-port fast charger (DC18RD), enabling continuous operation—while one battery powers the tool, the other charges in the charger. The cutting head accepts nylon line with a diameter of 2.0 to 2.4 mm or a cutting disc with a 25.4 mm bore (M10 x 1.25 LH thread). The gearbox housing is made of aluminum to enhance resistance to mechanical damage and corrosion.
The tool features a low noise level compared to gasoline equivalents and produces no exhaust emissions during operation. Battery charge indicators are located directly on both batteries, allowing real-time monitoring of remaining runtime without removing the batteries from the tool. Thanks to the standard LXT system, the tool is compatible with over 250 other Makita machines operating on 18 V or via dual-battery adapters.
When planning work, it is important to note the specifics of this model: the drive relies on two LXT batteries providing a combined 36 V, ensuring high performance with an adjustable cutting width ranging from 230 mm up to a maximum of 350 mm. The motor achieves rotational speeds from 3500 to 6500 rpm depending on the selected speed setting. The entire unit weighs approximately 4.1–4.7 kg including the installed batteries and generates a noise level of 77 dB(A) for sound pressure and approximately 89 dB(A) for sound power. Additional protection against weather conditions is provided by XPT technology, ensuring dust and water resistance during intensive garden use.
