Professional protection for photovoltaic installations
The RSP-PV8.0-1500-3P surge protective device is a specialized T1+T2 class solution designed to protect photovoltaic installations operating with voltages up to 1500 V DC. The device effectively protects inverters, PV modules, and other system components from harmful surges caused by atmospheric discharges or grid disturbances.
The plug-in design allows for quick mounting on a standard DIN rail in electrical switchboards. The three-pole configuration ensures comprehensive protection of all DC conductors in the photovoltaic system.
Technical parameters and protective performance
The device is characterized by a nominal discharge current In = 25 kA, which allows for the safe diversion of typical impulse currents occurring in PV installations. The maximum discharge current Imax = 65 kA guarantees resistance even to very strong surges.
A key parameter is the impulse peak current Iimp = 8.0 kA (10/350 μs), which defines the device's ability to work with the strongest lightning strikes. MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) technology ensures fast and reliable surge suppression characteristics.
The rated voltage of 1500 V DC enables application in larger photovoltaic farms and commercial installations with increased power.
Design and monitoring functions
The surge protector is equipped with a mechanical status indicator, which allows for an immediate assessment of the protection module's efficiency. A color change from green to red clearly signals a cartridge failure and the need for replacement.
Additionally, the device features an isolated potential-free contact, allowing for integration with building automation and monitoring systems. This enables automatic reporting of surge protector failure without the need for physical inspection.
The compact design occupies only 3 modules on the DIN rail (54.3 × 88.6 × 87 mm), facilitating installation even in densely packed switchboards.
Application and installation in PV systems
The device is mounted in parallel to the protected DC lines, providing effective protection in both common and differential modes. For optimal efficiency, installation on both sides of the line is recommended - near the PV panels and at the inverter input.
It is particularly important to use this type of protection when:
- Cable runs are long or routed outside the building
- The installation is located in areas with high storm activity
- The PV system has a high nominal power or operates at high voltage
Permissible conductor cross-sections for connection are a maximum of 35 mm² for rigid conductors and 25 mm² for flexible conductors with ferrule ends.
