Residual current device iID-63-4-300-A-S 63A 4-pole 300mA type A-S A9Z25463

Safety and selectivity in 4-pole installations

The Acti 9 iID series device is an advanced residual current circuit breaker that provides protection against electric shock and installation damage in 4-phase (400 V) installations. Its key feature is selective characteristic (marked as A-S), meaning the device has a built-in short-time delay function. Thanks to this, in the event of a fault further downstream in the circuit, this specific breaker will trip instead of the main protection device. This is invaluable in systems where maintaining power to the remaining circuits is a priority – e.g., in main switchboards of industrial buildings or large commercial facilities.

The residual current sensitivity is 300 mA, which places it in the category of devices primarily protecting against the effects of earth faults and insulation failures, rather than directly against electric shock from direct contact (for which 30 mA devices are used). Nevertheless, with proper system selection, it provides an additional level of safety. The device responds to sinusoidal AC currents and single-phase pulsating currents with a DC component up to 6 mA (type A), making it a universal solution for modern installations with electronic controls and inverters.

Mechanical strength and ease of installation

The device construction is designed for fast and secure mounting on a DIN rail. A width of 4 modules (72 mm) allows for compact arrangement in switchboards while maintaining full 4-pole functionality. The installation depth is only 44 mm, facilitating mounting in smaller enclosures. Specially designed terminals allow for the connection of single-core wires with a cross-section from 1 to 35 mm² and multi-core wires up to 25 mm² – this range covers the needs of most medium and large power installations.

It is worth noting the connection mechanism:

  • Double-sided terminals enable the connection of busbars or cables from both the supply and load sides.
  • Locking system prevents accidental switching or lever manipulation during live operation.
  • Visual indicators VisiTrip (red) inform about a trip caused by a short circuit or overload, while VisiSafe (green) confirms the absence of voltage at the output – which is crucial for technician safety during maintenance work.

The device is characterized by high resistance to current surges (3 kA) and a short-circuit withstand strength Icw of 1.5 kA. This allows it to handle short-term overvoltages without the need for immediate replacement or contact repair. Power losses are low (3.5 W), which translates to less device heating in enclosed switchboard spaces.

Application and system compatibility

This model is used where selective protection is required in circuits with a high rated current (63 A). It is ideal for:

  • Main switchboards in industrial and commercial buildings.
  • Protecting supply circuits for electric motors or high-power heating devices.
  • Temporary construction installations (in accordance with standards for construction switchboards).
  • Photovoltaic systems as AC-side protection (with appropriate type selection).

The device complies with strict EN/IEC 61008-1 and IEC/EN 60947-2 standards and holds a VDE certificate. The permitted operating temperature ranges from -25 °C to +60 °C, allowing for installation even in unheated technical rooms or outdoor distribution containers (provided there is protection from direct sunlight and rain – the IP20 protection rating requires installation in an enclosure).

This system can be expanded with additional auxiliary modules mounted tool-free on the side of the device: an undervoltage release (iMN) protects against voltage drops, an overcurrent release (iMX) enables remote switching, and an auxiliary contact (iOF) signals the on/off state to the BMS system. Additionally, there is a fault indicator (iSD) that precisely informs about the cause of the trip – whether it was a potential difference or a short circuit/earth fault. All these elements integrate directly with the main breaker housing thanks to the "click" system. The RAL 9003 housing color ensures an aesthetic match with standard Schneider Electric Acti9 switchboards.
