Protection of electrical installations against overvoltage

The varistor surge limiter module SPMO30B+C is a key element in protecting electrical installations in residential buildings, single-family homes, and small commercial facilities. Its task is to protect against the effects of lightning strikes and other voltage surges that can damage sensitive electrical equipment. This limiter belongs to class 1+2 (B+C) according to IEC/EN 61643-11, which means it provides comprehensive protection against both direct and indirect lightning strikes.

The SPMO30B+C limiter is mounted on a DIN TH-35 mm mounting rail, making it easy to install in a distribution box. Its compact size and IP20 protection rating allow it to be used in various environmental conditions – although installation indoors is recommended. The product has been tested at the Institute of Plasma Physics and Microsynthesis, confirming its high quality and reliability.

Characteristics and application

This four-pole surge limiter is characterized by high strength parameters: the nominal discharge current In is 30kA, and the maximum discharge current Imax is as high as 60kA. This allows for effective protection against strong overvoltages. Additionally, it has an impulse discharge current Iimp at 4.5kA and a low leakage current IPE below 0.5mA. The protection level voltage Up ≤ 1.5kV ensures a quick response and limiting the voltage to a safe level.

Limiters from the SPMO series are particularly recommended for use in TN-S/TN-C installations. The built-in optical signaling (green – OK, red – no protection) informs about the status of the insert, making it easier to quickly identify a damaged element and the need for replacement. The recommended maximum fuse is 125 gL/gG, providing additional protection against overload. Installation requires the use of rigid or flexible wires with a cross-section from 4.0 to 35mm².
