What is a radiator heater?
An electric heater is a special device that can be mounted next to a radiator. Even though it is most often installed in the bathroom, there is nothing stopping it from being installed in other rooms as well. The most important task of an electric heater is the ability to turn on a specific radiator whenever necessary. Also outside the heating season.
This is a big advantage - the heater allows you to turn on the radiator and heat the surface without having to run the entire installation.
An alternative is to use a control panel directly built into the housing. The heater must always be immersed in the so-called heating medium. It is mounted in the collector. When the radiator is heated, the heater will begin to rise, moving along the subsequent tubes. When it cools down, as a result of disconnecting the heater from the power source, it returns through a separate collector.
How much can you save with a radiator heater?
One of the most important advantages of using a heater is the reduction of heating expenses. When it is necessary to heat a selected room (usually a bathroom) outside the heating season, there is no need to turn on the heating boiler. Although most heaters are controlled manually, it is increasingly possible to choose devices that are also remotely operated.
To accurately calculate the savings associated with using a heater for a radiator, we need several data, such as the power of the heater, the cost of electricity and the operating time of the heater. Let's compare the costs of heating with a heater to a 3.5 kW air conditioner consuming 1 kW of electricity for 8 hours a day for 200 days a year, where the heating cost is PLN 1,424 per year.
Let's assume that the radiator heater has a power of 600W and operates for the same 8 hours a day, 200 days a year:
Energy consumption:
- 600W×8ℎ×200 days=960kWℎ
Energy cost:
- 960kWℎ×PLN 0.89/kWℎ=PLN 854.4
So the savings compared to an air conditioner would be:
PLN 1,424 −PLN 854.4 = PLN 569.6 per year.
How to choose the power of the heater for the radiator?
The power of the heater should be matched to the efficiency of the radiator. Specialists emphasize that the maximum power of the heater should not be higher than approximately 70-80% than the power of the radiator. The radiator parameters are given in the form: temperature of water supplying the radiator/temperature of water leaving the radiator/air temperature in the heated room.
When selecting a heater for a radiator with parameters 75/65/20, the maximum set temperature cannot be higher than 60-65 degrees, and the heater's power should be close to the radiator's power. However, in the case of heaters with a self-regulating element, the power of the heater cannot be higher than the power of a radiator with parameters 75/65/20.
The necessary information is provided by the manufacturer in the specifications. You should look for operating parameters after connecting to the power supply. This applies to both the heater and the radiator. For effective operation, it is very important that the elements are compatible.
