What is a radiator heating element?

Electric heater Onnline 300W GRBT, 1/2" An electric heater is a special device that can be installed near a radiator. Although it is most often installed in the bathroom, there is nothing to stop it from being installed in other rooms as well. The most important task of an electric heater is the ability to turn on a specific radiator whenever necessary. Also outside the heating season.

This is a big advantage, the heater allows you to turn on the radiator and heat the surface without having to start the entire installation. The shape of the radiator heating element resembles a heating rod. It is attached directly to the radiator and when connected to a 230V power supply, it allows the water in the radiator to be heated. An electric heater for a bathroom radiator consists of a heating element that resembles a long rod, a heating medium, a temperature sensor, and a control knob.

An alternative is to use a control panel built directly into the housing. The heater must always be immersed in the so-called heating medium. It is mounted in the collector. When the radiator is heated, the heater will start to rise, moving successively along the subsequent tubes. When it cools down, as a result of disconnecting the heater from the power source, it returns through a separate collector.

How much can you save with a radiator heater?

Heater for bathroom radiator Terma TS 1 One of the most important advantages of using a heater is the reduction of heating costs. When, outside the heating season, it is necessary to heat a selected room (usually a bathroom), there is no need to turn on the heating boiler. Although most heaters are controlled manually, it is increasingly possible to choose devices that are also operated remotely.

To accurately calculate the savings associated with using a heater for a radiator, we need a few data points, such as the heater power, the cost of electricity, and the heater's operating time. Let's compare the heating costs of a heater for a radiator to a 3.5 kW air conditioner using 1 kW of electricity for 8 hours a day for 200 days a year, where the heating cost is PLN 1,424 per year.

Let's assume that the radiator heating element has a power of 600W and operates for the same 8 hours a day for 200 days a year:

Energy consumption:

  • 600W×8ℎ×200 days=960kWℎ

Energy cost:

  • 960kWℎ×0.89zł/kWℎ=854.4zł

The savings compared to an air conditioner would therefore be:

1,424 PLN −854.4 PLN = 569.6 PLN per year.

How to choose the heating element power for a radiator?

The power of the heater should be matched to the efficiency of the radiator. Specialists emphasize that the maximum power of the heater should not be higher than about 70-80% of the radiator power. The parameters of the radiator are given in the form of: temperature of the water supplying the radiator/temperature of the water flowing out of the radiator/air temperature in the heated room.

When selecting a heater for a radiator with parameters 75/65/20, the maximum set temperature cannot be higher than 60-65 degrees, and the heater power should be similar to the radiator power. However, in the case of heaters with a self-regulating element, the heater power cannot be higher than the power of the radiator with parameters 75/65/20.

The necessary information is provided by the manufacturer in the specification. You should look for operating parameters after connecting to the power supply. This applies to both the heater and the radiator. For effective operation, it is very important that its elements are compatible.
