How does a grinder pump work?
Sewer pipes have a much larger diameter than clean utility water installations. In the latter, there is also pressure, which brings the liquid to the floors of the building, to any end point. Used, dirty water flows down much more often by gravity. However, it is not always possible to run sewer pipes in such a way that everything flows into the sewer network or septic tank. In such cases, it is necessary to create pressure. Pump grinders are used for this.
Their task is to break up larger elements floating in used water, and also push them further towards the sewage system . For this purpose, a tank was used to retain toilet paper or food remains. The knife located here breaks everything down, thanks to which smaller pieces can flow through the safety meshes to the pump. This pumps the sewage further - to the septic tank, which can be located even several dozen meters away, above the installed grinding pump.
Pump grinder and pipe diameter
When building a sewage system, you can meet 
with two types of pipes. Gray ones are designed for use inside the building. Their diameter starts from 32 mm. The largest ones reach a size of up to 160 mm. The continuation of the sewage system outside is in turn orange pipes with diameters from 110 mm to 500 mm. This allows for the gravity flow of dirty water without blocking larger impurities.
The use of a pump with a grinder means that all elements flowing down with water have a much smaller diameter. In addition, the flow of liquid forces the pressure created by the device. Thanks to this, pipes with a diameter of 22 mm to 40 mm can be used, without the risk of blockages.
Application of the pump with a shredder
When can a shredder pump prove to be very useful? There can be many such situations. The most common examples are:
- Construction of an additional bathroom in
building without the possibility of installing a large diameter sewage system. - An additional utility point located far from the house, and therefore often from the septic tank.
- Installing sanitary facilities in the basement, below the level of the drain to the septic tank or sewer system.
- The need to pump sewage from one septic tank to another (for example, due to problems with access for a septic tanker).
A general grinder pump is useful wherever sewage cannot flow by gravity (usually due to differences in height or distance) or there is no possibility of using sufficiently large sewage pipes. However, there is nothing to prevent such a device from supplementing an existing and operating installation in order to reduce the risk of blockages or sewage knocking out.
