The gate valve is the most common valve found in water supply networks.
The gate valve is a shut-off valve (has the function of stopping or allowing flow), so it must be used in either the fully open or fully closed position and cannot be used to regulate water flow. When throttling the flow with the gate valve, the turbulent flow rates through the valve body could cause vibration and cavitation, damaging the wedge and seat, which would ultimately lead to a deterioration of the sealing ability and consequently to leakage.
The valve is designed as an equal bore, which means that the valve seat has the same diameter as the inside diameter of the carrier pipe. It allows the fluid to pass through without obstruction to the flow and does not cause a pressure drop in the pipeline.
