Electrochemical corrosion protection in heat pump water heaters

The magnesium anode is a key protective element in modern heat pump water heaters, effectively preventing electrochemical corrosion of the tank surface and its components. The product has been specifically developed for models 2W300, 3W300, and the PCWU series (200K, 300K, 300SK) with stainless steel tanks.

Principle of operation and protective significance

The protective mechanism is based on utilizing the difference in electrochemical potentials between metals in the water installation. When different materials such as steel, copper, or brass are present in the system, micro-corrosion cells are formed in the water acting as an electrolyte, leading to accelerated corrosion. The magnesium anode acts as a sacrificial element - its more active potential ensures that corrosion occurs on the anode instead of on the water heater surface.

The rod construction with a 3/4" thread, a length of 320 mm, and a diameter of 21 mm ensures an optimal contact surface with the heating medium. This geometry guarantees an even distribution of protective currents along the entire length of the tank.

Service and operational replacement

Anode consumption is not precisely time-defined - the rate of degradation depends mainly on the domestic water hardness, its chemical composition, and the intensity of the installation's usage. For this reason, it is recommended to perform a technical condition inspection once a year.

The replacement criterion is consumption exceeding 2/3 of the initial volume of the anode or the passage of a maximum of two years since installation - whichever condition occurs first. Regular replacement is the foundation for maintaining the manufacturer's warranty and preserving the full efficiency of the heating system.

Compatibility and technical specification

The product is dedicated to water heaters with a capacity of 300 liters, which translates to an optimal proportion between the size of the anode and the volume of the protected medium. The device dimensions (32 cm height × 21 cm width) allow for installation even in installations with limited mounting space.

The anode is an original equipment component installed serially by the manufacturer, which guarantees full geometric and material compatibility with HEWALEX heating systems.
