Grid-inertial strainers – protection of heating and industrial installations
Grid-inertial strainers of the IOW type are devices designed to effectively protect heating, district heating, cooling, water supply and industrial installations from solid contaminants. Their operation translates into reduced operating, repair and maintenance costs for both the entire installation and individual devices. They are particularly recommended wherever the cleanliness of the working medium is crucial for the reliability of the system.
Construction and principle of operation
IOW strainers utilize a combination of centrifugal force and mesh filtration to remove contaminants larger than 0.1 mm. As water flows through the device, it gains rotational movement, causing heavier particles to settle on the walls of the tank. The fluid then passes through a mesh insert with a density of 196 meshes/cm², where smaller contaminants are retained. Magneto-strainer versions (IOW mag.) are also available, equipped with an additional magnetic insert that captures ferromagnetic particles. The design of the strainers ensures effective water purification even at higher flow rates.
Application and installation
IOW strainers are used in:
- heating nodes – both on the supply and return of the central heating installation,
- boiler rooms – on the return line of the boiler circuit,
- industrial installations – wherever protection against mechanical contamination is required.
The strainer should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Proper positioning of the device is important – incorrect installation can lead to damage to the filter insert. In low-parameter installations, it is recommended to install on the return, and in the case of supplying heating medium from the district heating network – also on the supply. Flanges of strainers with larger diameters require appropriate support of the pipeline.
Operating parameters
IOW strainers are designed to operate at a maximum pressure of 1.6 MPa and a temperature of up to 150°C. The devices are made of 18G2A steel or, as an option, hot-dip galvanized or made of stainless steel (with PZH approval). Various types of IOW strainers are available, differing in connection diameter (Dn) and tank capacity (V). For the IOW-65 model, the following values are characteristic: connection diameter 65 mm, tank capacity 31 liters, weight 29 kg and height 752 mm.
It is important to remember to regularly remove accumulated contaminants through the drain connection. Each strainer is supplied with technical documentation (DTR) containing detailed information regarding installation and operation. The devices have approvals and comply with applicable safety standards.
