Electrical installation protection with surge limiters V50
The V50 series Type 1+2 surge limiter is an advanced device designed to protect electrical installations from the effects of atmospheric and switching surges. It is a hybrid model combining the features of class B and C limiters, providing comprehensive protection in residential and commercial buildings. The device is used for potential equalization in lightning protection according to VDE 0185-305 (IEC 62305).
Construction and functionality
The limiter's construction is based on a modular design, occupying 4 modules on a DIN TH-35 mm mounting rail. This ensures easy installation and integration with existing electrical infrastructure. A distinctive feature is the use of blue spark gap inserts (NPE) with optical damage indication, which facilitates quick identification of the need for replacement. Additionally, the mechanical protection of the inserts protects against the effects of vibration. The device has a signaling contact that informs about the operation of the limiter – optical signaling on the housing.
This limiter is characterized by high efficiency, the ability to dissipate surge currents up to 12.5 kA (10/350 µs) per pole and up to 50 kA in total. The L-N protection level is 1.3 kV. The possibility of connecting conductors with a cross-section of up to 35 mm² (single-/multi-strand and flexible) ensures compatibility with various types of installations.
Application and network compatibility
The V50 limiter is compatible with various network systems: TN-S, TN-C-S, TN-C and TT. This makes it a universal solution for a wide range of electrical installations. It can be used in both AC networks with a rated voltage of 230 V and DC networks up to 350 V. Overcurrent protection can be implemented using fuses with a value of up to 160 A on both the series and parallel side.
It is worth paying attention to the 4-pole version (3+NPE), which provides additional protection through a spark gap insert on the last pole, maintaining galvanic isolation between the phase/neutral conductors and the protective (PE) conductor. This solution minimizes leakage current and the risk of dangerous touch voltage in the event of a limiter failure.
Safety and compliance with standards
V50 surge limiters meet the requirements of EN 61643 standard and have a certificate from the German Institute for Research and Certification VDE, which confirms their high quality and reliability. The housing is made of self-extinguishing plastic (UL 94 V-0), which increases safety in case of fire – the material is halogen-free, does not emit harmful gases or corrosive compounds.
