Power Supply and Control for High-Power Discharge Lamps

This conventional electromagnetic ballast is designed for operation with 70 W discharge lamps, including SON (sodium), CDO, MH (metal halide), and HPI types. The device operates in a semi-parallel circuit, meaning it requires an external igniter for proper lamp ignition. Thanks to the use of copper windings and an iron core, this model ensures stable performance under demanding conditions typical of industrial installations, warehouse halls, or outdoor lighting.

Key Construction Features and Applications

The device features a closed enclosure that protects internal components against dust and moisture, which is crucial for installation in harsh environments. The ballast includes built-in thermal protection – in case of overheating (maximum winding temperature is 130°C), the device automatically cuts off power, preventing permanent damage and enhancing the safety of the entire installation.

Electrical parameters are matched to a 230 V network at 50 Hz frequency. With power factor compensation, the power factor reaches 0.87, resulting in reduced energy losses in the network and an input current of 0.45 A (without compensation, it is 1.00 A). During operation, power losses amount to approximately 11 W.

For installers, compatibility with specific igniters is important. Recommended models are SN 57 or SND57, as well as the SUD10 digital series. The circuit also requires a capacitor with a capacitance of 12 µF and a voltage rating of 250 V for proper compensation.

Installation and Operating Conditions

The ballast has external dimensions: length 118 mm, width 65 mm, and height 53 mm. The distance between mounting holes is 103 mm, and the hole diameter is 6.2 mm. These dimensions allow installation in most standard luminaires designed for 70 W sodium and metal halide lamps.

When connecting wires, remember to use screw terminals accepting a cross-section from 0.70 to 6.00 mm² and prepare a wire loop of approximately 7 mm in length for optimal contact.

The device is certified according to ENEC standards and bears the CE mark. The operating temperature range is from -30°C to +130°C (ambient temperature), and the temperature rise under normal conditions is approximately 55°C above ambient temperature. This makes the ballast suitable for both unheated production halls and outdoor installations exposed to weather fluctuations. Lamp power is 70 W at a mains voltage of 230 V / 50 Hz for SON/CDO/MH/HPI types. The compensated power factor is 0.87, and the input current with this compensation is 0.45 A. Power losses are around ~11 W, and the maximum winding temperature should not exceed 130°C, with overall dimensions of 118 x 65 x 53 mm.
