Fluorescent starters
(2 )
When using a light source such as a fluorescent lamp, it must be adapted to use alternating current. Starters are used for this purpose, which not only guarantee the proper operation of such lighting, but also extend the life of fluorescent lamps by up to 25%. They also guarantee no flickering and instant ignition.
How do fluorescent lamp starters work?
A starter for fluorescent lamps is used to start the lamp. It allows current to flow for about a second after switching on, timing the operation and exciting the lamp to work. It stops the operation after the start-up is complete. It is also known as an igniter .
When the fluorescent lamp is interrupted, the starter re-initiates the start-up. The ballast is part of the igniter, and its purpose is to limit the current flowing through the lamp. This prevents sudden increases and decreases in energy, which affects the proper operation and life of the fluorescent lamps.
What types of igniters are there?
The older type is electromechanical starters. In this type of starter, the mains voltage causes neon or other noble gas to glow. The heated gas causes the starter contacts to heat up and connect, which ensures current flow through the fluorescent lamp and initiates its operation. In this case, magnetic ballasts are used.
Nowadays, however, a starter with an electronic ballast is increasingly used. Based on an appropriate electronic system, it allows for better voltage and current stabilization, does not cause flickering during ignition, is also characterized by quiet operation and extends the life of the lighting. The advantage of electronic ballasts is also lower energy losses and much higher efficiency than in the case of magnetic equivalents.
For both types, remember to select the ballast for the given power of the fluorescent lamp. This information is usually provided in the product specifications.
LED fluorescent lamps
Popular LED fluorescent lamps do not require the use of starters. The light source here is diodes distributed along the entire housing, which gives a quality of light similar to linear fluorescent lamps.
