DHW tanks

Hot water in the tap is a great comfort. If you want to enjoy a stream of water with constant pressure all year round, get a DHW tank.
A DHW water tank is a device used to store hot water for domestic use. It usually has a cuboid or cylindrical shape. The water in it is well isolated from the surroundings by polyurethane foam, so it does not cool down. It can also be heated by a gas or oil burner.
The DHW tank is able to maintain the water temperature for several days. It is a great way to reduce water and sewage bills.
The tank is very popular among homeowners. No wonder – this solution has many advantages. Thanks to the tank , household members can easily use several water intake points at the same time , without worrying about a sudden drop in pressure. In addition, the tank makes the water warm immediately after turning on the tap, and the stream is continuous and has a constant temperature . Economic issues are no less important – the tank saves the boiler's work and allows you to reduce the costs of water heating .
Coil and layered DHW tanks
Hot water tanks cooperating with heating boilers can be divided into two groups: coil tanks and layered tanks .
In coil tanks, the cold water flowing into the interior is heated by a pipe – a heating coil. When hot water flows out of the tank during collection, it is immediately replaced by cold water, which lowers the average temperature of the entire volume of water. Therefore, for the comfort of users, coil tanks usually have quite large capacities. Unfortunately, the consequence of this is their large size. The diameters of tanks, e.g. with a capacity of 150 l together with insulation and casing, even exceed 70 cm, and their heights reach 125 cm.
Layered tanks do not heat water on their own. This is done by DHW exchangers. The tank draws hot water from a plate exchanger located inside the boiler. During water collection, fresh cold water flows into the lower part of the tank, and the boiler draws it and, after heating, pours it into the upper part of the tank. Thanks to this, hot water does not mix with cold water, which does not lower the average water temperature.
How to choose a hot water tank?
When choosing a specific model of hot water tank, several issues are important. Pay attention on the shape and material of the tank . The most popular models are cylindrical, made of stainless or noble steel. The method of installation is also important. It depends primarily on the space available in the room. Standing, hanging or boiler-integrated tanks are popular. Check what insulating material is used in a given model. Most often you will find polyurethane foam , less often - polystyrene. In addition, be sure to specify how many heat sources you plan to connect to the tank. You can also choose from devices with additional functionalities. These include, among others, an additional electric heater , coils , a control system or a temperature indicator.
Hot water tank capacity
The capacity of the DHW tank is one of the most important parameters of the device. The efficiency and effectiveness of the entire system depend on it.
The capacity depends on the number of people living in the house and their average demand for hot water. It is assumed that one person uses about 15-30 l of it. A household of three people should therefore equip themselves with a tank of no less than 45-90 l. However, if users have a preference for long baths, the tank should be suitably larger.
In addition, the capacity should be larger the more water intake points there are in the system (bathtubs, showers, sinks).
