What is a welding helmet used for?
When working with a welding machine, it is essential to use appropriate hand and head protection. A welding helmet effectively protects the eyes and skin of the welder's face and neck from harmful ionizing radiation, sparks, bright light, filings and hot metal splinters. It serves to ensure not only safety but also optimal efficiency of the welding process. The welding helmet is worn like a helmet, so the welder has both hands free, which improves the pace and quality of work.
Passive vs. Automatic - Types of Welding Helmets
There are two main types of welding helmets. The basic variant is passive helmets. They have a built-in lens (usually replaceable) with a constant level of darkening. They are relatively cheap and exceptionally easy to use. A passive helmet simply needs to be put on your head. Some models have an additional, lifting flap (curtain) with an appropriately darkened lens. This type of helmet is intended mainly for people who weld occasionally and work on undemanding projects. Immediately after welding, an unpleasant feeling of deep darkness may persist. The second type is automatic (or self-darkening) helmets. An automatic welding helmet is a modern and flexible solution, equipped with a special ADF self-darkening filter, thanks to which the degree of darkening changes rapidly depending on the intensity of the welding arc. After welding, the visor gradually brightens. The automatic adjustment of the darkening level to the course of welding translates into maximum eye protection, high work comfort and a versatile solution. Self-darkening helmets are chosen for TIG welding and plasma cutting, among other things. In fact, the only disadvantage of the automatic model is the relatively high price.
Choosing the right welding helmet – important parameters
The welding helmet should be adapted to the individual needs and preferences of the welder, the frequency of work and the specifics of the welding process (method, current intensity, type of metal, light intensity, welding position). When choosing a welding helmet, pay attention to:
- type (automatic/passive),
- filter parameters, in particular the degree of darkness (DIN),
- size of the field of view,
- additional functions.
