What steel should you choose an axe from?
The working part of the axe should be made of materials that are absolutely resistant to damage and chipping. It is worth choosing a high-class model with a forged steel blade, induction hardened. Buying an axe is usually an investment for years. The quality of the product is confirmed by the warranty period. Some manufacturers provide a lifetime warranty on the head. You should also pay attention to the handles in axes. The wooden handle should be impregnated at the factory so as not to be prematurely destroyed. The type of wood used is important. For example, beech wood is characterized by high resistance to breakage and deformation.
Choosing the right type of axe
You can choose from two main types of axes. The first type is carpenter's axes - compact, handy, light and comfortable to use, equipped with a strong blade and a solid handle. They are used in carpentry and forestry work. They are often used by carpenters, roofers and sculptors. They are distinguished by a straight cutting edge, which allows for precise work with wood, e.g. carving and even cutting of wood along its entire length.
A special recess allows you to hold the axe close to the blade, which additionally increases the accuracy and safety of use. When processing the material, there is no unnecessary splitting of wood. There are many variants of carpenter's axes. They are chosen mainly by professionals for specific applications. What carpenter's axe to buy for precise work with wood (hewing, planing)? We recommend a lightweight model with an ash or hickory handle.
The second type is a heavier splitting axe . It is used for chopping wood, e.g. for firewood. It has a relatively long and straight handle and a characteristic head. Thanks to this design, the operator can swing freely and strike with considerable force, causing the wood to split. Splitting axes are great for chopping branches as well as large trunks. In the latter case, there is a significant risk that the wood will not be completely cut through on the first blow. However, trees still crack under the influence of internal tensions. There is often a wedge on the cheeks of the head, which prevents the blade from getting stuck in the wood and allows for the chopping of larger pieces of material. The non-stick coating, which is equipped with, for example, the Husqvarna axe , reduces the level of friction, making work significantly easier.
Splitting models differ primarily in the length of the handle, weight, materials and construction. Are you wondering which splitting axe will work well in gardening, including cutting wood? Choose an axe weighing about 1.2-1.3 kg, equipped with an anti-shock handle about 700 mm long or longer. It is worth choosing a model made of forged metal. It offers increased durability and resistance to damage.
The difference between a hatchet and an axe
Every axe is also an axe. However, not every axe is considered an axe. Not all axes are suitable for chopping wood. However, these names are often used interchangeably, because customers do not always know exactly what tool they need. As a rule, an axe is small, has a steel, curved, wide blade and a short, wooden handle that allows comfortable work with one hand. It is characterized by multifunctionality. Sometimes it can be an axe, sometimes a hammer, sometimes a knife, and during mountain expeditions - an ice axe.
