Protect the water pump against dry running!

Added: Tuesday, 3/7/2023

One of the most common causes of water pump failure is dry running, i.e. running dry, without liquid. This leads to loss of cooling, increased friction and overheating, and ultimately even to complete seizure. How to extend the life of the pump and protect it from damage?

Submersible pump in a concrete well

What is dry running and what are its consequences?

Dry running is destructive to both submersible and submersible pumps. This phenomenon may have various causes, including a drop in the liquid level, mounting the pump too close to the water table, or failure to adjust the pump parameters to the requirements of a given well . Not all factors are predictable and therefore difficult to prevent, but there are ways to protect the pump against operating in harmful conditions.

How to avoid dry running?

The solution is liquid level control relays offered by F&F Filipowski . Sensors are placed in the well, which allows you to control the minimum and maximum water level and turn off the pump if the level drops below the value required for safe operation of the device . When the water level in the well rises, the pump is automatically turned back on. The range of optimal levels is set by the user himself using special operating sensitivity regulators.

Liquid level control relays in the Onninen wholesaler

The offer includes several models of relays that can be purchased at the Onninen wholesaler. Which one to choose? Descriptions of individual products will help you make the right choice.

PZ-828 RC liquid level control relay

PZ-828 RC liquid level control relay The simplest liquid level control relay in our list is PZ-828 RC . This is a single-state model used to detect the presence of liquid at the level of installing the flood sensor (probe). Therefore, it can be used not only to operate the pump and protect it against seizing, but also to warn against rising water levels, i.e. against flooding . It can be used, for example, in a laundry room, detecting a leak while turning off electrical circuits or activating an alarm. The probe can be mounted on a horizontal surface.

PZ-829 RC liquid level control relay, two-state

This relay is a two-state PZ-829 RC liquid level control relay . Two-state, i.e. it has two flood probes, separate for minimum and maximum levels. The range is set by the user, and sensors control the pump's on and off, maintaining the liquid level at the designated level . The measurement principle is based on the conductivity of electric current, therefore the relay is only suitable for electrically conductive liquids.

Liquid level control relay with PZ-832 probes

The PZ-832 liquid level control relay with probes is basically similar to the model above, but is additionally equipped with an overflow and empty tank alarm . The pump, of course, turns off and starts again automatically - the signal has a purely informative role. There are certainly situations in which it is good to know that the liquid level has dropped below the minimum and the pump has stopped or overflowed.

PZ-831 RC liquid level control relay, three independent control levels

PZ-831 RC liquid level control relay, three independent control levels PZ-831 RC liquid level control relay, three independent control levels is a relay with three independent control levels. This adds precision and reliability, so this model is especially recommended for demanding applications , i.e. those where the continuity of pump operation is of particular importance.

Pump seizure due to dry running is no longer a problem. Thanks to liquid level control relays, you can easily monitor, for example, the water level in a well, and if it drops , the worst that can happen is a pressure drop, while the pump itself is protected . It is worth choosing such a solution so that you can sleep peacefully with one less problem to worry about.
