XXL flexible pipe coupling for sewage

The VPC XXL DN2420-2470MM flexible coupling is an advanced solution for connecting sewage pipes with large nominal diameters from 2420mm to 2470mm. The product belongs to the Funke VPC® family of couplings, which enable a secure and leak-proof connection of pipes made of different materials – even when they differ significantly in external diameters due to their design.

The design is based on an adjustable sealing flange made of EPDM elastomeric rubber according to PN-EN 681-1 WC/60, a centrally self-aligning plastic positioning basket, and two stainless steel clamping bands made of V2A (1.4301) or V4A (1.4404) in the oil and gasoline resistant version.

Design and materials

The core of the system is a sealing sleeve made of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), which features a double sealing profile ensuring reliable sealing in accordance with PN-EN 1610. The material is characterized by high impact strength and resistance to cracking at both low and high temperatures.

The positioning basket is a key structural element – its middle part deforms conically, allowing for centric and stepless diameter adjustment with a cylindrical alignment of the connected materials. The diameter reduction process occurs uniformly around the entire circumference, while the articulated middle part allows for separate reduction on each side of the coupling.

The V4A (1.4404) alloy steel used belongs to grades that are particularly resistant to corrosion and acids. In the standard version, components are made of V2A (1.4301) steel, whereas the special OEL version features a sealing sleeve made of NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber), providing resistance to oils and gasoline, as well as particular resistance to aggressive substances found in sewage and soil.

Operating parameters and technical capabilities

The VPC XXL DN2420-2470MM coupling offers a clamping range from 2420mm to 2470mm with a maximum reduction of 50mm. This flexibility allows for the compensation of differences in pipe wall thicknesses resulting from different production technologies – without the need for additional leveling rings.

The multiple double sealing profile with a width of up to 380mm (insertion depth of 190mm on each side) forms the basis of a professional, leak-proof, and secure pipe connection. The large, cylindrical contact surface (60mm on each side) guarantees uniform distribution of clamping forces around the entire circumference of the pipe.

The system ensures tightness up to 2.5 bar, which has been confirmed by the MPA institute for all XXL series diameters. The coupling holds DIBt-Zulassung Z-42.5-450 for the nominal range from DN100 to DN2000.

Installation and technical maintenance

Installation requires the use of a hybrid tensioner, which allows for tightening the clamping bands from a single position with a torque of 25Nm. This operation should be checked using a torque wrench – a torque angle wrench is not required thanks to the hybrid system.

The installation process involves measuring both external diameters of the pipes and comparing them with the product's clamping range. After sliding the sealing sleeve onto the larger diameter, the two pipe lines are centrally aligned independently on each side of the coupling (two-dimensionally). The bilateral guide channel for the bands ensures their secure guidance during assembly.

Normative compliance and certificates

The coupling meets the requirements of DIN EN 1610 standards for sewage pipe installation and DIN EN 295 for vitrified clay. The design has been tested for durability under shear loads (DIN 4060) and provides a stepless connection on both sides with guaranteed resistance to shear forces.

The materials are resistant to the influence of saline seawater and the aggressive soil environments typical for underground installations.
