Cathodic protection for tanks – magnesium anode with a brass plug
The magnesium anode with dimensions 33x200 mm, finished with a 5/4 inch brass plug, is a key element of the cathodic protection system for domestic hot water tanks. Its task is to protect metal elements from electrochemical corrosion, extending their lifespan and ensuring reliable operation of the installation.
Application and construction
The magnesium anode operates on the principle of sacrificial protection – it corrodes instead of the protected metal elements, such as the steel tank. Magnesium is a chemically more active metal than steel, so it corrodes first. This keeps the tank unaffected by corrosion processes. The anode construction includes:
- the magnesium anode itself (type M-005487),
- a 5/4 inch brass plug (type 40-300111) – allows easy attachment of the anode to the tank,
- O-ring and anode/plug gasket (types M-000075 and M-015548) – ensure a tight connection and prevent leaks.
Installation and compatibility
A socket wrench with a size of 38-73 mm is recommended for installing the anode. The anode is compatible with popular models of hot water tanks, including:
- SGW(L) with a capacity of 80 and 100 liters,
- SGW(L)x2 with a capacity of 80 and 100 liters,
- SGW(L)P with a capacity of 80 and 100 liters.
It is worth remembering that magnesium anodes wear out during operation, therefore regular inspection of the anode condition and its replacement (according to the manufacturer's recommendations for the tank) are essential to ensure continuous protection against corrosion. Replacing a used anode is a simple service operation that can be performed by a qualified installer.
