Stationary air disconnect switch 1600 A – design and application

The disconnect switch is a permanently mounted device designed for installation in distribution boards, both as a front‑central element and as an intermediate one. It functions as a main, safety and maintenance disconnect – meaning it allows safe disconnection of the circuit from the power source during maintenance, repair or failure. The latching mechanism prevents accidental closing, and additionally allows the button to be locked with up to three auxiliary locks – ideal for applications requiring lock‑out/tag‑out.

Installation and compatibility

Designed for operation in a 185 mm SaS (busbar) system, it connects directly to the power rails – no conventional cables are required. This shortens installation time and eliminates the risk of wiring errors. It is compatible with the univers N Hochstrom system, allowing integration into modern distribution boards without needing to modify the cabinet structure. Central front mounting facilitates access to the contacts and checking the device status without opening the enclosure.

Protection and functions

It operates in a voltage range of 440–690 V AC, with a short‑circuit current withstand of 55 kA for 1 second – meeting the highest requirements for large industrial installations. The rated continuous current of 1600 A allows handling high‑power loads such as motors, conveyor lines or heating systems. The IP2X protection rating on the front side provides basic protection against accidental contact with live parts, but it is not a sealed device – unsuitable for humid or dusty environments.

Additional functions and expansion

It has four auxiliary changeover contacts – they can be used for status signalling (closed/open) or integration with automation systems. The built‑in motor drive enables automatic closing of the device after power is restored – without the need to press the button manually. Optionally, a voltage trigger (under‑voltage or over‑voltage) can be added, extending protective functions to detect network instability.

Compliance and standards

Compliant with PN-EN 60947-3 (disconnect switches) and DIN EN 61439-1/-2 as part of a complete distribution system. Insulation voltage Ui = 1000 V and impulse voltage Uimp = 12 kV ensure safety even under network surges. Operating temperature from –25 °C to +70 °C allows use in various environmental conditions – from cold‑storage warehouses to production halls.

You don't need to source separate components for signalling or automation – the four auxiliary contacts are already built in. Installation is faster thanks to the quick‑connect system for accessories (e.g., triggers, coils).
