What is a welding cable?

During the welding process, we are dealing with high-intensity current. In order for welding to be efficient and safe for the operator, he should use special welding cables. Welding cables are elements used to connect welding machines with the electrode holder and the welded object. The welding cable has a core made of copper (large diameter wires) and a rubber coating with special properties. The cable insulation is usually flame retardant and resistant to oil, grease, petrol, atmospheric factors, protective gas and UV radiation. Welding cables are characterized by high flexibility at both high and low temperatures.

Application of welding cables

The welding cable is typically used for MMA, MIG and TIG welding machines. Ground and electrode cables are used for welding using these methods. Due to their unique properties, welding cables are used in the shipbuilding and automotive industries, in agriculture or on construction sites. They can be used in dry and humid environments, inside and outside buildings.

Which welding cable should I choose?

The most important parameter of each welding cable is the cross-section of the core (also known as the cross-section or diameter of the cable). In this respect, the cable must be adapted to the requirements of the welding machine. Therefore, before purchasing a welding cable, check the technical data of the device. Small welding machines (welding current in the range of 200-300 A) require the use of a welding cable with a diameter of max. 35 mm2. In case of doubt, it is always safer to use a cable with a larger cross-section than the model of the device you have. A smaller one can lead to irreversible damage to the welding machine. In industrial applications, powerful devices (over 500 A) are often used, for which cables with a cross-section of up to 120 mm2 are designed. Other important parameters of welding cables include:

• core material (it should be high quality copper),
• permissible ambient temperature during and after installation,
• core insulation material,
• properties (e.g. fire resistance and oil resistance in accordance with the relevant standards).
