Contactors vs. Relays – What’s the Difference?

Relays are usually used for resistive and slightly inductive loads, as well as in circuits with zero potential. The basic task of electrical contactors is to connect main circuits. These are devices consisting of a coil and 2 pairs of contacts - these are the main (working) contacts and auxiliary contacts.

Contactors are called electrical mechanical switches. They are capable of operating under high current loads and overloads. They must also cope with switching on, switching off, and conducting current under normal circuit operating conditions.

Construction and functions – how is a contactor constructed and how does it work?

Standard high-quality contactors that you will find in the Onninen wholesaler are made of several elements. These are the 2 pairs of contacts and the coil mentioned above, as well as the core, contact springs and the chamber in which the electric arc is extinguished.

The main contacts are responsible for starting the device, while the auxiliary contacts are responsible for transmitting information. The contactor is activated when a current of the appropriate voltage is supplied to it - it then affects the coil, which leads to closing the main contacts, and consequently to switching on a specific device.
