What are Mifare readers?

The access control system most often operates on the basis of proximity readers, which are a more modern, safer and much faster alternative to traditional locks and keys. There are currently many technologies to choose from. One of the most popular is the Mifare standard. The name Mifare includes:

• proximity cards and key fobs based on RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology – they use radio frequency for efficient and reliable communication with the reader;
• readers that allow you to read and write data on Mifare proximity cards, connected to a computer or other device/system.

Mifare readers usually work in terminal mode. Some models have a built-in digital access control keypad, so the user can use a proximity card/fob or enter a unique PIN code.

Advantages of Mifare technology

The most important benefit of using Mifare readers and cards is a high level of security. Thanks to the special anti-sabotage system, in practice it is impossible for an unauthorized person to gain access to the device mechanisms. In addition, Mifare readers are characterized by maximum durability, resistance to mechanical damage and - as a rule - an increased IP tightness class, which allows them to be installed in outdoor conditions (depending on the operating temperature range of a given model). In addition, cards based on Mifare technology often have extensive memory, allowing for the storage of various types of data. Their advantage is also multifunctionality. They can be used not only to open doors or cabinets, but also, for example, for contactless payments.

The most important parameters of Mifare KD readers

When choosing a Mifare reader, please pay attention to:

• supported card standard (e.g. Mifare 13.56 MHz),
• IP tightness class (affects the possibility of using the device outside or only inside the building),
• card reading distance,
• reading time,
• operating temperature range,
• power supply method (battery power supply means there is no need for additional cabling),
• additional features (based on individual situation).
