What is the purpose of an expansion tank?

The expansion tank, or expansion tank, is a very important element of a properly designed and constructed heating system. Its basic task is to protect the system against uncontrolled pressure increase resulting from the increasing volume of water - the heating medium. The tank stores excess water and water vapour, which is created in the event of overheating (boiling water) and thus prevents the risk of the system leaking or the safety valve being activated.

How are expansion tanks constructed?

These elements consist of 2 chambers (water and air), which are separated by a flexible, heat-resistant material. When the temperature in the system increases, the pressure and volume of the water also increase; when the temperature drops, the volume of the water decreases and the air expands, which leads to the water being pushed out of the second chamber.

The expansion tank is most often made of steel. It is a cylindrical or flat tank, resistant to rust. Anti-corrosion properties result from the use of specialist paints and anti-corrosion powder enamels.

Open expansion vessels or expansion vessels?

There are two types of expansion vessels – diaphragm vessels or open expansion vessels.

• Open vessels – used in installations with a solid fuel boiler, e.g. coal or wood. Protects against uncontrolled pressure increase due to overheating, which can result in water boiling. They are installed at the highest point of the circuit and are connected to the boiler with a riser pipe.

• Expansion vessels – used in installations with an oil or gas boiler. Internal systems (including an automatically driven water circulation) are responsible for protection against overheating. A so-called safety group should be installed in the boiler, consisting of an expansion vessel, pressure measuring elements and a safety valve.
