Wood Drill Bits – Types and Applications

Looking for wood drills ? At Onninen you will find drills designed for people working with wood, both professionally and amateurs. We offer tools necessary for drilling holes in hard and soft wood, as well as wood-based materials. Check out the differences between the different types of wood drills .

Features of wood drills

Wood drills are products for precise hole making in natural wood and wood-based materials. Drilling holes in a raw material with a more porous and irregular surface than metal means that wood drills have specific features. These include:

  • a centering tip, the purpose of which is to stabilize the drill in the initial phase of drilling and create a hole with a constant diameter along its entire length;
  • made of high-speed tool steel, which is hard, resistant to abrasion and rapid temperature changes;
  • a point angle different from that of metal drills, thanks to which the drill works well in heterogeneous raw materials.

As for natural wood? Drills!

There are many types of wood drills available on the market. The type of wood drill you use should depend on the effect you want to achieve. Below you will find descriptions of drills for natural wood: can, twist, spiral and spade, so-called flat. How do they differ from each other and from concrete drills? Check it out! We have the right equipment, the quality of which will allow you to use it without any problems for a long time.

Can drills

Cup drills are designed for making large holes in wood with a diameter of 10 to 75 mm. They are characterized by cutting the entire volume of the hole. In this category of drills, there are subgroups of foresters, center drills and hinge drills. The first are used in stationary drills, the second allow for obtaining so-called clean holes without splintering thanks to the use of high-quality tool steel.

Twist drills

A twist drill is one of the most frequently purchased types of drills for wood and wood-based materials. It has two cutting edges and a centering blade. These types of wood drills are made of stainless steel, including the highest models made of sintered carbide. Thanks to this, they are characterized by durability and precision of the holes made (up to 3 mm in diameter). They are used in hand and table drills.

Spiral drills

This type of drill allows for deeper and larger holes than twist drills. What are these properties? This tool has a centering cone, the so-called guide spike, which "hides" in the wood during drilling. The polygonal handle prevents the drill from turning when it hits a knot or other harder parts of the wood.

Spade drills

These types of drills make holes from 10 to 50 mm in diameter. They are characterized by flat cutting edges. They are mostly used for work that does not require a high level of precision, e.g. construction, not carpentry.
