Battery – an irreplaceable source of energy
The battery is one of the essential components of any motor vehicle. It supplies power to the starter motor, ignition coil and circuits. In this way, it allows the engine to start.
The battery operates when the engine is turned off or when the crankshaft speed is too low to start the generator.
The battery consists of primary and secondary cells connected together. Each cell is made of positive plates (cathodes containing lead dioxide) and negative plates (anodes containing lead), arranged alternately and interspersed with insulators. After the plates are immersed in an electrolyte – a solution of sulfuric acid and water – chemical reactions occur, as a result of which energy is created. Secondary cells accept and release it as a result of reversible chemical reactions.
Battery charging
Batteries are not well served by short-distance driving. The alternator is then unable to produce enough current. A flat battery prevents the engine from starting. It must then be charged using a rectifier.
Remember that complete discharge may result in permanent damage to the battery!
Which battery to choose? Battery capacity, starting current
Are you noticing a voltage drop and need to replace your battery? Check out what to look for when buying a new battery for your car!
First of all, consider its capacity given in ampere-hours (Ah). It should be the same as the value suggested by the car manufacturer. The general rule is – the more receivers, the greater the capacity. However, do not exceed the recommended parameter value – the battery capacity strictly adapts to the alternator requirements!
Another important parameter is the starting current. It determines how much current the battery can generate at once. Petrol engines require less current than diesel engines. The value of this parameter is given on the battery label, right next to the nominal capacity. It is determined according to the EN standard, the so-called cold cranking current CCA.
Maintenance-free batteries – what makes them stand out?
Unlike older generation batteries, maintenance-free batteries do not have caps for adding distilled water. They simply do not need it – the calcium-calcium or calcium-silver technology used in them means that the electrolyte does not evaporate. The battery plates can be constantly flooded with the same solution.
