What are rain inlets?

A rainwater inlet is a key element of the system for draining rainwater and melting snow from various surfaces and outdoor areas, such as roofs, terraces, pavements, gardens or parking lots. It ensures effective collection and drainage of rainwater, which minimizes the risk of flooding and damage to critical areas. Rainwater inlets are used in residential buildings, industrial facilities and in urban infrastructure.

How does a rain inlet work?

The rainwater inlet is connected to the gutter riser. It is responsible for draining the rainwater accumulating in the gutter to the sewage system, rainwater tank or seepage boxes. Thanks to the presence of the grate or grid and the settling tank, the sewage system is protected against clogging due to the ingress of solids such as branches, leaves, stones, etc.

Which rain inlet should I choose?

The selection of a rainwater inlet has a decisive influence on the efficiency of rainwater drainage. In the selection process, the following should be taken into account:

  • surface slope,
  • target location,
  • connection to the sewage system.

A rain inlet can be made of various materials. The most important thing is that it is a material resistant to weather conditions and mechanical loads. The most common are cast iron, plastic and stainless steel inlets. It is worth paying attention to whether the rain inlet has an easily accessible, removable sediment trap that can be easily cleaned.

Street inlets

Street inlets are used in storm sewer systems as connections, ensuring effective drainage of rainwater from streets, parking lots, underground and multi-level garages, driveways, industrial buildings, etc. They have smaller diameters than concrete wells. They are extremely durable and resistant to cracking. They can be loaded with a weight of up to several tons, which allows them to be used in places where passenger cars and trucks move. Street/parking inlets often have to meet rigorous fire protection standards, because during a fire there is a risk of fire spreading through the drain pipes to other parts of the building. In order to obtain the required fire protection class, the inlet body contains a special fireproof mass that automatically swells, closing the nozzle against access by flames and smoke.
