Chimney cowls – operating principle, characteristics

Chimney caps, also known as chimney deflectors, are extremely important devices in the context of optimal operation of the chimney flue. They are used to support the gravity chimney draft and protect against the so-called reverse draft – i.e. the risk of exhaust air or exhaust gases flowing back into the building. The use of chimney caps is particularly important in the case of poorly designed and constructed chimney installations, in which there are problems with maintaining the appropriate draft.

Importantly, chimney caps are also used to protect the flue pipe and chimney from birds that may sit on it or even build nests. They are also effective protection against atmospheric precipitation – rain, hail or snow.

Types of chimney caps

One of the criteria for dividing chimney caps is the principle of operation of individual devices. On this basis, we can distinguish:

• Fixed chimney caps – fixed caps use the kinetic energy of the wind to create negative pressure in the chimney flue. They do not change their position.

• Rotary caps – create negative pressure in the chimney through the rotational movement of the cap. They work well in the case of ventilation ducts.

• Hybrid attachments – a similar operating principle to rotary attachments, but are additionally equipped with electric motors that generate thrust even in windless weather.

• Self-adjusting caps – these are so-called chimney firefighters, which are set in the direction of the blowing wind. In this way, there is no possibility of the air flowing out of the chimney back into the duct.

When should chimney caps be used?

The chimney cap should be used in installations where there are problems with the draft. However, in Poland there are areas where their use is obligatory. Detailed guidelines regarding the necessity of using these devices are specified in the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 12.04.2002:

"In buildings located in wind load zones II and III, as defined by Polish Standards, chimney caps protecting against draught reversal should be used on smoke and exhaust ducts, while maintaining the requirements of § 146 section 1."
