Hammer drill – an indispensable tool for demanding work on the construction site
A hammer drill is a power tool designed for intensive work in hard surfaces. It is usually used for impact drilling holes in concrete, stone, marble, etc. Hammer drills are equipped with a pneumatic impact mechanism (impact drills do not have it). They allow for easier and more convenient processing of the material, because they do not require strong pressure of the drill bit on the material. These tools work in different modes. Most often, they allow:
- drilling without impact in various, mainly softer building materials,
- impact drilling in demanding substrates such as concrete or brick,
- breaking wall coverings, tearing off tiles, chipping off plaster, etc.,
- chiseling,
- mixing mortars.
The multifunctionality of the hammer drill makes it an indispensable tool during renovation and construction of a house or demolition work. This tool is used daily by general construction workers, electrical installers, roofers, assemblers and other specialists, as well as DIY enthusiasts.
The most important parameters of hammer drills
The basic parameter of a hammer drill is the power supply method. You can choose between models powered by a cable and cordless models equipped with batteries. The former are much more powerful, so they are primarily suitable for professional work. On the other hand, battery-powered devices offer mobility and convenience of operating a power tool. The key factor in the length of work on a single charge is the battery capacity. A hammer drill should be adapted to the nature of the work performed. Its purpose is determined by: the type of accessory holder and the energy of a single impact (J). Most modern devices have an SDS-Plus type holder (drill clamp), which allows the use of drills with various diameters and facilitates their rapid replacement. For the most demanding applications, e.g. for drilling holes in concrete with large diameters, a heavier and more powerful model with an SDS-Max type accessory holder will work perfectly. When choosing a hammer drill for intensive and long-term tasks, it is also worth considering solutions that increase the comfort and ergonomics of the operator's work. Examples? Vibration reduction function, T-shaped design and low weight.
