Soldering iron – a basic tool for soldering
A soldering iron is a tool used for soldering. It is used in electronics, the metalworking industry, modeling and many other areas. It is made of a handle and a tip that is in direct contact with the binder (solder), i.e. the connecting material. Soldering is a method of permanently connecting metal elements using a binder (solder) with a melting temperature lower than the melting temperature of the parts being joined. During the soldering process, the surface of the metals being joined is not melted. The soldering iron is selected for the type of soldering, or more precisely, the melting temperature of the solder. In this respect, we can distinguish:
- soft soldering (below 450 °C),
- hard soldering (above 450 °C),
- high temperature soldering (above 900 °C).
Special burners and furnaces are also designed for soldering.
Types of soldering irons
Transformer soldering irons are very popular, as they reach high temperatures thanks to the flow of high-intensity current through the wire (tip). The tip heats up in just a few seconds. The transformer soldering iron has an integrated transformer. More modern models are equipped with additional functions, such as lighting the soldering area or a power switch. Another type is resistance soldering irons (also known as heaters), in which the tip is heated by an electric heater. The group of heater models includes a soldering iron with a tip made of a massive piece of metal, which improves the process of soldering elements with large surfaces, such as sheets, pipes or gutters. In addition to electric soldering irons, gas soldering irons are available on the market. A gas burner, which heats the tip, is responsible for power supply. They allow for melting, for example, tin with an admixture of copper, which transformer models cannot handle. In addition, they do not require access to an electrical power source, so they are perfect for field applications. Their advantage is also high precision of work. However, they will not work well for soldering large components. However, for soldering electronic components, regardless of their size, a special precision soldering iron with adjustable temperature is designed. It will meet the expectations of both a professional service technician and an electronics fan.
Soldering iron and soldering station
A soldering station is an advanced piece of equipment for industrial use, which consists of a soldering iron and a control panel. The panel allows you to adjust the soldering temperature by, for example, changing the power, thermostat or thermocouples. There are different types of soldering stations: digital and analog, heater and hot air (so-called Hot-Air).
