Compensating cables – precision temperature measurements

Compensating cable AN 4 Ln-SIL 2x1.5 is a specialized cable designed for connecting thermocouples to measuring devices in temperature regulation and measurement systems. Its main task is to ensure measurement accuracy by minimizing errors resulting from temperature differences at the connections. Thanks to this, the cable acts as an extension of the thermocouple, faithfully reflecting temperature changes at the measurement point.

Construction and materials

The key to the reliability of this cable is its carefully selected construction. The conductors are made of special materials – Fe/Cu-Ni, Ni/Cr-Ni or Pt-Rh/Pt – adapted to specific types of thermocouples. Insulation is available in several variants: PVC, silicone, Teflon or fiberglass, allowing the cable to be adapted to specific working conditions and application requirements. In addition, the cable has a braided screen made of tinned steel wires (type SY) or copper (type CY), which provides protection against electromagnetic interference and increases resistance to mechanical damage. Single-color conductor marking facilitates identification and correct connection.

Properties and parameters

The AN 4 Ln-SIL 2x1.5 cable is characterized by high quality workmanship and meets the DIN 43713 standard regarding conductor resistance. The test voltage for cables with PVC, fluoropolymer and silicone insulation is 500 V (conductor/conductor, conductor/screen, screen/screen), and for fiberglass insulation – also 500 V (conductor/conductor). Insulation resistance for PVC, silicone and fluoropolymer is at least 10 MΩ x km. Operating capacitance depends on the type of insulation and the structure of the strand/wire – approximate values are given in the text: for PVC with a strand cross-section of 1.5 mm², the capacitance of the core is 135-138 nF/km, and the shielded pair 240-245 nF/km; for FEP, respectively, 60 nF/km and 120 nF/km; while for silicone the core has a capacitance of 80 nF/km.

The cable inductance does not exceed 1 mH/km for versions with PVC, fluoropolymer and silicone. It is important to remember about the resistance tolerance per meter of +/- 10%.

Compensating cables are widely used in industry, research laboratories and anywhere where precise temperature measurements are required. They are ideal for connecting thermocouples to measuring devices in regulation and control systems of technological processes. Choosing the right insulation material allows the cable to be adapted to specific environmental and temperature conditions.
