What are temperature sensors used for?
Industrial temperature sensors are extremely important elements of automation systems. They provide continuous, precise measurement of the temperature of liquids, gases or components of machines, devices and installations. They are used in various industries, including the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. They are used, for example, in underwater engines, where they are used to measure temperature and protect the device from overheating.
Types of temperature sensors
There are 2 main types of temperature sensors. • Thermocouples (thermocouples) are economical and reliable sensors, they have a simple construction, based on two wires made of different metal alloys, connected at two points. A voltage is generated between the wires, which shows the temperature change. Thermocouples can operate at extremely high temperatures. • Resistance sensors (measuring resistors, RTD sensors) are used in areas requiring maximum measurement precision and at relatively low temperatures. Temperature measurement is performed in the process of resistance of the RTD element with temperature. The accuracy of the measurement depends on the material used. Platinum is recommended, but the most expensive. However, due to their construction and purpose, the following are distinguished: • head temperature sensors, • sheath temperature sensors, • wire temperature sensors, • temperature sensors for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Industrial humidity and temperature sensors are also available on the market, which enable quick and accurate measurement of both relative and absolute humidity, as well as dew point and wet bulb temperature. Temperature transducers (transmitters) should be distinguished from temperature sensors. The sensor allows for temperature measurement and its conversion into measurable units of electric current. On the other hand, the transmitter, when connected to the sensor, converts the measured temperature into a signal, which allows it to be seen, recorded and maintained. These are two devices that work together.
