HDPE and LDPE materials – what is worth knowing about them?

The abbreviation HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) means high-density polyethylene, characterized by a regular arrangement of molecules. This is a high-quality plastic, produced in the process of ethylene polymerization - similarly to LDPE. The main difference between these two materials, however, results from the difference in pressure used during production, which translates into a different structure of particles.

High density polyethylene HDPE – key features:

• resistant and durable in various conditions,

• completely physiologically inert,

• does not react with water, alcohol, gasoline and acids (except strongly oxidizing acids),

• it is odorless, has no smell,

• considered one of the safest materials (plastics) for humans.

LDPE is a low-density polyethylene obtained during high-pressure polymerization. Like HDPE, it is a physiologically inert thermoplastic that does not allow water vapor to pass through. It is durable, yet exceptionally flexible and stretchable – it is used, among others, for the production of food packaging, garbage bags, shopping bags or heat-shrinkable films. It is also widely used in the pharmaceutical industry.

Where is HDPE used?

In the case of HDPE, which is characterized by greater strength and hardness, we are dealing with a material with universal applications. It is used, among others, for the production of fuel oil containers, tanks and canisters for oils and fuels in the automotive industry. Thanks to its resistance to acids, it is also used in the chemical industry.
