Welding electrodes – what is their function?
Welding electrodes are essential elements during welding. In the case of welding using an electric arc (also known as arc welding), the electrode is responsible for transferring electrical energy to the material being processed. In other words, it closes the current circuit - as a result, the temperature between the electrode and the welded metal increases, which allows work to be performed.
Coated electrodes and their types
The MMA method, or coated electrode welding, uses this particular type of electrode. These electrodes are called coated because of the substance that covers the metal core inside. The substance melts as a result of the increase in temperature, which causes the release of a gas that acts as a shield on the weld pool.
A big advantage of MMA welding is that it is not necessary to use additional cylinders of shielding gas. Welding work using coated electrodes is therefore quite popular and is willingly practiced by both professional welders and DIY enthusiasts.
Coated electrodes are divided into several types, differing in the composition of the coating and properties.
Rutile Electrodes
This is the most frequently chosen type of welding electrode, primarily due to its universality of use – it is suitable for welding steel, among other things. They are an economical solution and quite easy to use. Welds made using rutile electrodes are smooth. They can be welded in almost any position, and the slag formed after melting the coating is easily removed.
Cellulose Electrodes
The special feature of cellulose electrodes is the ability to work in difficult conditions, e.g. outdoors - they are highly resistant to unfavorable weather conditions. They allow for deep penetration into welded elements, but the durability of the weld is shorter than in the case of, e.g. basic electrodes.
Basic electrodes
Basic welding electrodes are also called low-hydrogen electrodes. Drying basic electrodes before use guarantees a weld that is resistant to cracking and mechanical damage. They are mainly used for welding work with thicker materials, e.g. for welding structural steel.
Acid Electrodes
In this case, the coating is formed by iron oxides and deoxidizers. Acidic electrodes allow for a flat and smooth weld with slightly lower strength. They allow for welding in several different positions.
