What are the characteristics of halogen-free cables?
Halogen-free cables are distinguished primarily by the materials from which they are made (specifically the core insulation and outer sheath). They determine the unique properties of halogen-free cables. Halogen-free cables do not contain halogens, i.e. elements such as chlorine, fluorine, bromine, iodine and astatine. During the combustion of halogens, e.g. during a fire, toxic smoke is emitted, which poses a serious threat to human health and life, and also causes corrosion. Cross-linked polyethylene or another special polymer is used to produce the insulation of halogen-free cables. The sheath consists of halogen-free materials that do not spread flames. During the combustion of halogen-free cables, only water vapour and carbon dioxide are emitted. No toxic, corrosive or corrosive substances are produced. Therefore, halogen-free cables do not pose a threat to the safety of people and metal objects in extreme situations. Additionally, during ignition, a small amount of smoke is produced, so there is no need to carry out smoke extraction during rescue and evacuation operations. Halogen-free cables also have very good mechanical resistance and are extremely light, flexible and pliable, which makes installation easier. Their properties should be confirmed by appropriate certificates and approvals.
Use of halogen-free cables
Halogen-free power cables are used in buildings with a high concentration of people or high-value property and wherever there are stringent fire safety requirements. Halogen-free power cables can therefore be found in hotels, airports, tunnels, medical facilities, shopping malls, banks, museums, cinemas, theaters, offices, office buildings, etc. They are often part of alarm, control and signaling systems. They are installed indoors, in the air or in concrete. Halogen-free cables are not run directly in the ground.
