Construction of phosphate screws
Phosphated screws, also known as black screws or phosphate screws, are fastening elements made of metal wires or steel rods (mainly low-carbon galvanically phosphated steel). They have a characteristic conical head, which is part of the structure, connected to the thread. During the production process, the screw is soaked in sulphuric acid and then - after thorough cleaning of the material - immersed in solutions of zinc, iron, magnesium phosphates and phosphoric acid. The coating obtained in this way has a matte, dark grey, almost black finish, ensures the resistance of the screws to corrosion and facilitates their fastening in hard materials. Special press tools are used for the processing of elements, which allow obtaining practically any size. The last stage of production is heat treatment, which makes phosphate screws even more durable and resistant to damage.
Application of phosphate screws
Phosphated screws are used primarily for:
- fastening plasterboards to wood or metal - the phosphated screw penetrates the board without damaging the cardboard layer;
- for connecting chipboards, wooden profiles, plywood and metal and plastic objects.
Covering the screws with the above-mentioned phosphate coating provides protection against corrosion and mechanical damage, which allows these fasteners to be safely used in a humid environment and for connecting hard metal parts.
Types of phosphate screws
There are two main types of phosphate screws: standard models and variants with self-drilling threads. The former usually require drilling holes to accommodate fasteners. In contrast, self-drilling screws have threads with a special tip, which makes them easy to mount in a structure without having to drill a hole.
